So this week was my friend’s birthday, and since I love baking I made her a cake! The turnout was so good that I want to share the results! The cake I made was from a basic box recipe but the secret ingredient to making it extra delicious was using caramel sauce instead of frosting. I got the caramel sauce recipe from my roommate Tiffany, who happens to be an expert in the kitchen. So thanks to Tiff, I will share her simple but tasty way of making delicious caramel sauce to put a new spin on a basic chocolate cake.
So here are all the ingredients/supplies I used to make a three layer chocolate caramel cake covered in sprinkles!
1 Box of Duncan Hines Chocolate Food Cake
All the ingredients on the box include eggs, vegetable oil, and water
1 small container of multi colored sprinkles
1/2 Cup of Sugar
3 Tablespoons of Butter
1/2 Cup of Cream
3 Square Tin Foil Pans

I first baked the chocolate cake by following the instructions provided on the back of the box. When it was ready to put in the oven, I used three square tin foil pans because I wanted to give the cake height by making it three layers. After separating the cake mix evenly in the three pans I put them in the oven to cook. While the cake baked, I started making the caramel sauce.

To make the carmel sauce, I first melted the sugar over medium heat. Then I added the butter and then wisked in the cream. The most important thing when making this sauce is that you must wisk roughly and continually. It order to make the substance caramelize, it is necessary to constantly stir. As the sauce cools, it will be a consistency syrupy like the image shown below.

When the cake was finished cooking, I let it cool for about 15 minutes. Once cooled, I cut the cake into three squares. In between each layer I drizzled caramel over the surface and sides of the cake. After drizzling the caramel and stacking the cakes, I covered the cake in sprinkles. Besides adding flavor, the caramel also helps the sprinkles stick to the cake. To me, sprinkles do not have much flavor, but they are excellent for adding color and texture. To add the finishing touch, I put tall multi colored candles on top of the cake, which of course added to the birthday excitement. The cake was a hit! The birthday girl truly enjoyed herself.
