MANETAIN THOSE LOCKS!

HELLO BEAUTIFUL!

Is this fluctuating weather giving you bad, frizzy hair days? Don’t let your hair suffer for this dreadful weather! The solution to taming your hair is as simple as riding a bike! Okay, so it may take some effort, but it will ultimately be worthwhile. One of the hottest and simplest styles this season is the “milk maid braids.” If you have long beautiful hair, braid it to the side and play around with a slick back look or a side swept bang. Don`t have long hair? The ponytail on the side looks great with any hair length! Either way, it`s a fast and easy way to tame those locks without worrying about frizz or hair getting in your face. Want an alternative way to keep those locks out of your face? Simply tie your hair into a low bun. Maybe you just want to let your hair down and fiercely strut to class as though you were on a runway. If that’s the case, feel free to let those locks loose, but keep in mind: give your hair attractive volume. Straight and curly hairstyles are currently hot so show texture, prevent it from looking dead, and prepare for all eyes to be on you! Stay dry and have a frizzy free week! <3

STYLE ICON - GRACE JONES

Grace Jones is a character unlike the rest and has a certain je ne sais quoi that inspires and attracts many. Maybe it’s Jones’ unique style, fierce attitude, or mere presence. Whatever her “it factor” is, I’m always astounded when looking at her photographs. The multi-talented Ms. Jones decided to challenge the “norms” of society when she sprang into the fashion industry in the 1980’s as a model whose “male” voice, Amazon-like stature, and rich dark chocolate skin color were far from ordinary. As a triple threat she has achieved success in the music, film, and modeling industries. But I am blown away at the fact that Ms. Jones continues to wow her fans through a variety of platforms at the age of 61.

The picture above is one of my absolute favorites of Jones because she perfectly portrays the concept of intersectionality. Photographer Andrea Klarin captures Jones’ extravagance and iconic style perfectly while showcasing her overlapping cultural identities. There has always been this hegemonic dominance of the white heterosexual female image—and thus, this “couture dominatrix” played out in Klarin’s culturally mixed “imaginary world” becomes quite fascinating. The interplay of masculine and feminine, high status and low status, and introverted and extroverted clothing suggests that Jones is of multiple ethnicities, classes, genders, and sexualities.

From the outlandish framing to the subtle agency used with contrasting textures and clean silhouettes, this picture gives great outlook into the model herself. Born to stand out, the photograph adds another layer to the ever-complex nature that makes up the “Queen of the Gay Discos,” aka Ms. Jones. Although this isn’t the type of shot that is plastered all over the front covers of elite magazines, it's nice to see a glimpse of what the future could hold if hegemonic standards would allow such dissidence.

DIOR GOES EQUESTRIAN - OLD FASHION STYLE GRACES GALIANO'S RUNWAY

For Dior's new line, John Galiano (head designer for Dior) went for a ride, literally. The focus of Dior's offbeat but surprisingly classy new runway look was a 1950's equestrian elegance themed. Normally I would be bored by this idea for a line. I feel like the equestrian theme has been done over and over again by various designers (Ralph Lauren Polo anyone?) but for some reason Galiano decided to take this age old idea and spice it up a bit. By introducing color, texture and attitude into his line, Galiano played with the conventional ideas of the rider's lifestyle giving us a view of what her life might be like after she finished her ride and went home as well. When sticking to the stereotypical neutrals pallet, Galiano twisted up the shape of the garment, straying from the conventional image.

And when Galiano decided to stick to a sharp and precise shape, he played up the use of color and texture, using bright reds, and massive amounts of lace.

This version of old 1950's elegance is a fresh take on the idea of the equestrian. By providing the audience with both sides of the woman (the rider and the femme fatale) Galiano took a tired theme for a fashion show and spiked it with major attitude and perspective.

PRETTY IN PASTELS, FIERCE IN BOLD

The start of a new and beautiful year has already commenced, but are you caught up with the latest color trends? The transition of pretty pastel colors to deep and bold shades of earthy tones has already hit the runways. It has devoured the fall seasons’ hottest looks and will continue to dominate this winter season. From runway to street wear, the exquisite earthy tones are far from making a monotonous fashion statement. With the cross between soft and dark tones, even the simplest outfits can be made fierce. Keep things simple or incorporate dark or pasty colors. Either way, don’t be afraid to spice things up and take a risk. Don’t let the rain stop you from making a fashion statement; let it give you a reason to shine!

WINTER TRENDS IN DAVIS

As we all know, winter in Davis can be cold, wet, windy and gloomy. Although the weather may be unpleasant, we can still dress fashionably. Don't let the winter weather restrict your wardrobe possibilities - there are many ways to stay warm and trendy.

Some of these winter trends include pea coats, tights, beanies and scarves. High socks and leg warmers are a personal favorite of mine along with warm knitted scarves and knitted ear warmers. Now I know we are all working off a limited college budget and shopping can be very limited around Davis but there are a couple of places located in and around Davis where you can get your trendy winter clothes.

Target has a wide variety of winter clothes that are priced relatively cheap. The good thing about Target is that you can check out all of their styles online and see what your are interested in even before going to the store. And if online shopping is your thing, you can just do your shopping on the website! Another great thing Target is known for its rain boots. Going to school in Davis almost requires a person to have a pair of rain boots. Although Target does not sell rain boots in their stores, their selection can be viewed on their website. There are so many different colors and styles and they start at $24.99!

Another good place to find great winter trends in The Burlington Coat Factory in Woodland. Burlington is great because this store has a very large variety of coats. Pea coats at Burlington range in prices starting as low as $39.99! Not only does it have a variety of coats, there is a large selection of scarves, beanies and tights. The Burlington Coat Factory is definitely one of my favorite places to get my trendy winter wear.

For those of you who can knit, or have a relative that can knit, you can knit your way to winter trends! The majority of my knitted scarfs and ear warmer headbands are from my aunt. Can't knit or crochet? Why not try making this simple and environmentally friendly hat and mitten set out of an old sweater. The tutorial is really easy to follow so there's no excuse for cold ears and frozen fingers!

There are so many different ways to dress warm and trendy. Just remember to have fun with your style and do not be afraid to mix and match your trendy winter wear.
